Red Vox is a band that finds themselves playing occasionally in our office space. The Staten Island Psyche-Rock group presents it's newest release to the world, a mixture of Power-Pop and Non-Traditional Psyche Rock, "Another Light" is an enjoyable experience that captures the listener from the very start and sails them through quite the trip. First, it needs to be mentioned that Red Vox shows incredible maturity with this record. A major step up in not only song composition but production quality from their previous two releases (Blood Bagel and What Could go Wrong). "Another Light" stood out to us in 2017 as a record that showed aspects of song writing that independent artist in other categories were lacking. Rex Vox gives every track a heavy presence of individuality while also allowing each track to flow evenly into the next. Seeing a 13 track release can be intimidating (unless we're looking at a Power-Violence / Grindcore Release), but the way every track blends into the next creates a dreamlike transition among the tracks...almost a Bowie-ish flow to within the tracks that allows the entire release to meld into one massive experience. "Another Light" also stands out as a pure Genre-Blender. Earlier we mentioned the mixture of Power-Pop and Psyche-Rock, but the biggest draw of "Another Light" is how it managed to perfectly blend Genres like Dark-Wave, Dark-Rock, Synth-Rock, and in some small cases, Emo-Pop / Bedroom-Pop. Despite it's incredibly high Production quality, we can't help but beg for a Lo-fi version of this release, rough demo special edition please? One last major subject we'd like to touch up on is the overall tones of the release. Something we love from high production releases we review is trying to guess Authentic Tone VS Artificial Tone. While listening, we found it very difficult to actually point out what tones / effects were Pre and Post Production, which for us means we can absolutely recommend "Another Light" to anyone who obsesses over Pre / Post production tones because what's more fun than listening to amazing music and questioning what came from actual gear as opposed to computer generated. If we hadn't said it enough, "Another Light" was one of our favorite releases from 2017. It shows everything we look for in a release, maturity, compassion, mystery, and overall it's just great music.
