There's nothing we love more than collections, mainly collections of covers or singles. After recently stumbling across Princeton NJ's Dreamy Indie Rock Worst Sumo and getting hyped up their upcoming release "Cheerleader", we decided to dig into their collection of singles..."Worst Singles". It's been a while since we've done one of these blog reviews, but sit back and chill with us while we dive on on. The record opens with "Charger", which is the only song on the record to not be solely written by the talented singer / songwriter Andy Ciardella and features tor miller. On it's own, it's outstanding track. it's got really nostalgic 70s folk-pop vibes with a blend of the modern bed-room pop staples. Moving into Tracks like "Weird Little Waiting Room" and "Giraffes" we get a bit more of a complex composition than we expected to see after Charger, the groove in Weird little Waiting Room becomes very defined and Giraffe is where Worst Sumo really demonstrates their ability to shape a groove from track to track, sort of increasing the groove level throughout each individual track but also track after track, if that makes sense? We see this quite strongly in the last two tracks "Never This Scary" and "Area 51 revisited" where we shift into a The Doors like dynamic...very energetic and youthful rock with some really solid dance grooves over some vintage guitar tones. It's worth listening to the release on it's own as a journey through unique and expressive tones. Worst Singles is far from it's title suggest, it's actually quite pleasing and explores what it means to have your own voice when it comes to being a singer songwriter, be it through your actual vocal expression of your instrumental tones, even in the fidelity of the mixing and such. Worst Singles is a great review to come back on, it's what we love here at Polaris, unique, expressive, all those buzzwords we love to use.
