Let's Talk about, Snakeboy, An Emo-Pop Triumph.

Every now and then we like to take a minute to just talk about an artist in general, not a specific release or event, but a group or musician as a whole. This week, we decided to take a minute to talk about Philadelphia's Emo-Pop up and comer, Snakeboy. With three current releases, Snakeboy offers a lot of personality and diversity among their discography. All three releases do have one thing in common, an attention to fine crafted grooves and calm inviting vocals. With that being said, let's take a look at Snakeboy, and get into what makes their music so enjoyable and an instant favorite of ours. Starting with "Please Clap" (releases March 24th, 2017), there's one thing about this release that instantly puts Snakeboy on the hype express for us. The track "Paper Streets" is without a doubt reason alone to give the release a listen. The other two tracks (Alright and Tough) do an excellent job of introducing us to the ideals and atmosphere of Snakeboy, but it's Paper Streets that solidify the potential. The release as a whole has tones that mimic Modern Emo Revival and more Nostalgic Emo Pop, but Paper Streets specifically entirely captures the mood and tone that most newer bands seem to miss. There was a very clear and passionate attempt here to express through the music, and Snakeboy really nailed the target. It's the same type of feeling captured in their single "Monster" (released April 18th, 2017), which is a host to very notable quirks of Lofi / Bedroom Pop, something that when done properly can bring out a brightness of Emo-Pop that isn't quite seen often, or seen done quite properly. "Vices" (released May 5th, 2017) shows us Snakeboy's ability to write more structured and Pop-oriented tracks, specifically seen in the titular track "vices", a track filled with catchy hooks, soothing vocals, and an inviting surf-rock tone behind the bands trademark Emo-Pop mask. Snakeboy is without a doubt consistent when it comes to their releases, not yet releasing something that doesn't fit their already established persona. The best part about that, is that it really works. Emo-Pop is lacking in energy and groove, and Snakeboy certainly provides those two elements casually with every release. Snakeboy, for us, is an easy recommendation. For anyone who's feeling like Lofi / Emo Pop is fading or no longer consistent, give Snakeboy a listen. Even to our general audience, give Snakeboy more than a chance, this is a project that you should quickly get behind before the hype catches on.
