A few months back I was introduced to the Summer Sample demo from NJ's own Serious Matters. I was pretty stoked, finally finding a band that combines the vocals of Circa Survive with the instrumental works of bands like The Fall of Troy and Chiodos. It was such a fantastic demo that I couldn't wait to see the band again. After more than 20 shows in the NJ region, Serious Matters finally released their debut EP, Can You See The Sky From Here, and it blew away all expectations I had.
A lot of band scramble to release a debut record, most of the time you can tell if a record was rushed or created with the purpose of having a release for the sake of it. Serious Matters managed to release a record that not only comes across as experienced and dedicated, but showcases the bands passion and love for their art. Each track gives the record something that stands out, be it with driving guitar solos, mathy drum segments, and powerful vocals. It's such a diverse record while managing to stay contained and not go overboard. It's a record that sets the bar for the rest of the bands career. Serious Matters has so much potential, and "Can You See The Sky From Here" is such a near perfect and beautiful debut that it only makes listeners want more from the band. We at Polaris can honestly say we're excited for everything Serious Matters does from here on, and you should be too.
