It's magical when a bands entire discography is worth listening too, not just for the quality of the songs, but for the diversity and passion presented within the work itself. Today, we're going to be taking a look at a few releases from Seldom Family, Philadelphia showcore / shoegaze. Starting with their Self Titled and moving on to their other works, we're going to talk about what makes Seldom Family such a unique and Excellent project.
Seldom Family's S/T is incredible. From front to back it's such a relaxing experience, every track brings you down into a cozy comforting space. To say that "Seldom Family" is a good record just isn't enough. The production quality in itself is worth discussion, as well as every frame of every track. The composition of the record is outstanding. Tracks like "True Blue" and "Not a Singer" demonstrate the bands ability to step back from previous tracks and succeed at creating something "different" while still staying in the same ball park, and that is what Seldom Family does better than any band in the genre right now. "Different while still in the same Ball park" is exactly how I would describe "Audrey & Laura", a 10 track record that tells an elaborate story with themes and tones and settings. Very reminiscent of various Film soundtracks, "Audrey & Laura" could be played in place of Silent Hill 2's soundtrack an have just as much as an impact on the player. You could replace the Stranger Things soundtrack and have the same eerie tones and atmosphere. There's just a thick layer of Dread and Mystery within every track, it's easy to close your eyes and imagine a scene being played out and it's so dark and beautiful. Aside from their S/T and "Audrey & Laura", Seldom Family has a few other worth while releases on their bandcamp and we do highly suggest you check them out. This review sat on the back burner for so long, due to a lot of changes occurring at Polaris DIY, but we're happy that we finally got around to pouring our hearts out about how incredible Seldom Family is.
